Roberta Williams' Phantasmagoria spans seven CD-ROMs of full-motion video adventuring. Acclaimed for her King's Quest series and a major influence on modern graphic adventures, Williams employs live actors and a dark, disturbing theme throughout this adventure. Through a point-and-click interface, you'll assume the role of Adrienne, who must uncover the horrific mysteries behind the haunted mansion she and her fiancé recently purchased. Phantasmagoria is a rather large adventure game from Sierra in terms of CDs (7), not necessarily in length. You play Adrienne, who has just moved into an old mansion with her photographer husband Donald. Shortly after moving in, Adrienne begins to experience horrifying nightmares and have odd encounters inside the creepy old abode. Further, the house is having a severe effect on her husband, changing him for the worse and you must discover its secret before he (or the house) kills Adrienne.

The game places heavy emphasis on full motion video for exposition and cutscenes at various junctures to advance the storyline. Further, Adrienne is represented as a digitized character roaming around pre-rendered settings in the house. She inspects various rooms, finds items, adds them to her inventory, finds places to use the items, and triggers advancements in the storyline. There are 7 chapters to the game, and there is a status screen in the game which tracks your linear progress within the chapter.

If you happen to get stuck in the game, there is a talking skull icon who identifies himself as the hintkeeper. You can click on him to get out of a puzzle jam.

The 11th Hour is the sequel to the widely successful game, The 7th Guest. It utilizes a much improved video compression engine by Graeme Devine and is also the game which brought forth Trilobyte's eventual demise.

This time you play the role of Carl Denning, boyfriend to the reporter Robin Morales. Robin has mysteriously vanished while trying to delve into the secrets of the rotting mansion of the once evil mastermind, Henry Stauf.

The game features new puzzles, redone graphics and indeed an improved engine - much smoother, with 16 bit graphics and an entirely new soundtrack. The basic gameplay is still similar to its predecessor: the player walks through the mansion, watches FMV sequences and solves logic riddles. The so-called GameBook, a laptop, can be consulted to receive puzzle hints.

I was surprised at the level of story there was in Myst. All of the loathers have been getting to me, I guess, because I remembered it as a series of puzzles that lead to a conclusion, but it actually has a pretty strong fantasy plot. Replaying it brought back a lot of fond gaming memories. I actually remembered quite a bit with regard to the puzzle solutions (I guess because I strained my brain so hard the first time around that it all got hardwired), and so I found it not so fun the second time through (but it went fast!). Thus, I would recommend buying this new version only if you haven't played Myst before or if you played it years ago in Win 3.1 and now want to try it again on your more up-to-date system. However, if either of these two are the case - go for it!
